Today you will be writing a description. You can choose what you would like to describe. You can choose one of the dishes on your menu or the diner where you serve your food. In order to be successful, you should include the following:

  • Expanded noun phrases
  • Fronted adverbials (to start your sentences)
  • Describe the senses (what does it smell, taste, look, feel and sound like?)
  • Similes
  • Metaphors
  • Personification

The more you include the better your writing will be. Remember, don’t get too carried away. Your writing needs to make sense and should have capital letters and full stops throughout.

Task 1
Create a bubble/mindmap with all your ideas around it. You should use two different coloured pens. With the first colour, you should outline all of the features of what you’re describing.

Once you have completed this stage, with your other colour add as many adjectives as you can think of. Remember, the more adjectives you add now the easier your writing will be. Don’t forget, you can use a thesaurus to help you. Once you are done, it should look something like this:

Once you have completed the first task, you may begin writing. The ‘features’ you have identified will each have their own paragraph where you describe them in detail. We have done this recently in class when describing New York City.

I have attached some writing maps to help you, you don’t have to use them. You DO NOT need to print these.
