Knowledge Organisers
What Are Knowledge Organisers?
A Knowledge Organiser (KO) is a simple, one-page summary of the most important facts, dates, vocabulary, and key ideas that children need to know about a topic. Think of it as a map of the essential knowledge your child will be learning in a subject or unit.
Teachers use them to make sure that learning is clear, focused, and consistent. They highlight the “must-know” information, so children can build strong foundations of knowledge to support deeper learning and understanding.
Why Are They Helpful?
-
Clarity – Children (and parents!) can see exactly what needs to be learned.
-
Memory building – Having the key facts in one place helps children practise and remember them more easily.
-
Confidence – Children feel more secure when they know what’s expected.
-
Home support – Parents can see what their child is learning and help with quick quizzes or conversations.
How Can Parents Use Them at Home?
-
Review little and often – Spend 5–10 minutes a few times a week looking over the organiser.
-
Quiz your child – Cover up sections and ask them to recall key facts or definitions.
-
Talk it through – Ask your child to explain what a word means or tell you about an event/person they’re studying.
-
Spot connections – Link what they’re learning to everyday life, books, or visits (e.g. spotting Roman numerals on a clock).
-
Celebrate progress – Praise effort and improvement, not just correct answers.
