Pupil Leadership

At Woodchurch CE Primary, we believe that every child has the potential to lead—not just in the future, but right now. Our Pupil Leadership opportunities help children grow in confidence, responsibility, and empathy, while developing important life skills such as communication, teamwork and decision-making.

Why Is Pupil Leadership Important?

Pupil leadership is about much more than wearing a badge or carrying out a job. It’s about:

  • 🗣 Giving children a voice in shaping their school community

  • 🌱 Encouraging responsibility and ownership of behaviour and learning

  • ❤️ Fostering care and service, reflecting our Christian values

  • 💡 Building skills for the future—confidence, resilience, and collaboration

  • 🤝 Creating role models who inspire others and support younger pupils

By empowering pupils to lead, we show them that their ideas matter, their actions have impact, and that they can make a difference—not just in school, but in the wider world.

Our Pupil Leadership Roles

Our school offers a range of leadership opportunities for pupils across different year groups. These include:

Head Boy & Head Girl

Chosen from Year 6, these pupils represent the school with pride, maturity and integrity. They act as ambassadors at school events, welcome visitors, and support staff and pupils alike. They are role models for the entire school community.

House Captains

Each of our four school Houses has a House Captain (and Vice-Captain), elected from Year 6. They lead by example, encourage teamwork, organise House events, and help inspire a sense of community and friendly competition through school-wide activities and sports.  We want our children to be inspired by people who have made a real and lasting difference to the world—through courage, creativity, compassion, and discovery. That’s why we chose four inspirational figures to represent our school Houses. Each one reflects the values we aim to nurture in our pupils every day.

🔴 Curie House (Red) – Marie Curie

Marie Curie was a pioneering scientist, famous for her discoveries in chemistry and physics, and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. She showed incredible determination, broke barriers for women in science, and dedicated her life to helping others through her work in medicine and radiation.

🔵 Berners-Lee House (Blue) – Sir Tim Berners-Lee

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, changing the way we live, learn and connect with each other. He’s a brilliant example of how one idea can change the world. He also chose not to profit personally from his invention—believing in equal access for all.

🟣 Parks House (Purple) – Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks is remembered around the world for her brave stand against racial injustice in 1955, when she refused to give up her seat on a bus. Her quiet act of courage helped spark the civil rights movement.

🟢 Attenborough House (Green) – Sir David Attenborough

Sir David Attenborough has spent a lifetime helping people understand and care for the natural world. His documentaries and advocacy for the environment have inspired generations to protect our planet.

Worship Leaders

Our Worship Leaders support the spiritual life of the school by helping to plan and lead Collective Worship, reflect on our Christian values, and guide others in prayer and reflection. They help us live out our vision of being a light in the world and sharing God’s love.

Digital Leaders

Digital Leaders are our go-to team for all things tech! They help support the use of technology across the school, encourage safe and responsible internet use, and often assist with assemblies and presentations. They’re trained in aspects of online safety and act as digital role models for others.

Growing Leaders of Today and Tomorrow

Leadership is not limited to these formal roles. We encourage leadership in the classroom, on the playground, and in everyday acts of kindness and courage. Whether a child is helping a friend, taking initiative, or representing their class in a pupil voice meeting, we value and nurture leadership in all its forms.

At Woodchurch, pupil leadership helps us build a stronger, more caring community, where children feel seen, heard, and empowered.
