Secondary Transition
At Woodchurch CE Primary School, we recognise that moving on to secondary school is a significant milestone in each child’s education. It marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, and we are committed to ensuring that every child is prepared, confident, and supported as they take this next step.
How We Support the Transition
We begin preparing children for the move to secondary school well before the end of Year 6. Our aim is to make the transition as smooth and successful as possible by working closely with pupils, families, and secondary schools.
Handover Meetings
In the summer term, our Year 6 teachers and SENDCo meet with staff from the secondary schools to share important information about each child. These conversations help secondary staff understand pupils’ strengths, interests, learning styles and any additional needs.
Shared Handover Documents
We use a standardised set of transition documents that are agreed by all Ashford-area schools. These provide a clear overview of each pupil’s academic progress, social and emotional development, and any support they may require. This ensures consistency and continuity for every child.
Secondary School Visits and Contacts
Secondary school staff often visit Woodchurch to meet with our Year 6 pupils or hold virtual Q&A sessions. Many of our pupils also attend induction or transition days at their new schools during the summer term.
Pupil Preparation
We support children in school through class discussions, personal reflection, and practical advice to help them feel ready. For some pupils, more tailored support is offered, including additional visits or enhanced transition planning with our SENDCo.
Parental Communication
We work closely with families to support decision-making and preparation throughout Year 5 and Year 6. Parents are welcome to get in touch with questions at any point.
Schools Our Pupils Typically Attend
Our Year 6 pupils move on to a range of excellent secondary schools in the area, including:
-
Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre
-
The John Wallis Church of England Academy
-
Chilmington Green School
-
Highworth Grammar School
-
The Norton Knatchbull School
-
The Marsh Academy
Each school offers something different, and we encourage families to explore all options to find the right environment for their child.
Advice for Year 5 Families
Most secondary schools begin holding open days and information events in September and October for Year 5 families. These events are a great opportunity to visit schools, meet staff, and get a sense of the school’s values, curriculum, and expectations.
We encourage families to start visiting schools in Year 5 to allow plenty of time for thoughtful decision-making.
Continuing the Journey
We want every child to leave Woodchurch CE Primary feeling ready for the next stage of their learning journey. Through careful planning, strong partnerships with secondary schools, and a deep knowledge of our pupils, we aim to make the transition positive and successful for all.
