Resilience

Building Resilience in Children

Resilience is the ability to cope with challenges, adapt to change and bounce back from setbacks. It is an important life skill that supports children’s confidence, independence and overall wellbeing.

Why Resilience Matters

Children with strong resilience are more likely to:

  • Keep trying, even when things feel difficult

  • Problem-solve and find new ways forward

  • Manage stress and emotions more effectively

  • Build positive friendships and relationships

  • Stay motivated in their learning and personal goals

When resilience is low, children may:

  • Give up quickly when tasks feel hard

  • Avoid new experiences or challenges

  • Feel overwhelmed by mistakes or setbacks

  • Withdraw from school or social activities

  • Struggle with confidence, self-esteem and mental health

How We Support Resilience in School

At Woodchurch, we actively promote resilience by:

  • Encouraging a “have a go” attitude and celebrating effort

  • Teaching growth mindset, helping children see mistakes as part of learning

  • Providing problem-solving activities and teamwork tasks

  • Helping children set small, achievable goals

  • Offering emotional support and regular check-ins

How You Can Build Resilience at Home

Parents and carers can help by:

  • Allowing children to try things independently, even if mistakes happen

  • Talking about times you have overcome challenges and what you learned

  • Praising effort, persistence and problem-solving – not just results

  • Encouraging healthy coping strategies such as exercise, hobbies and relaxation

  • Teaching that setbacks are opportunities to grow, not failures
