Speech, Language and Communication

Supporting Speech, Language and Communication

Good communication skills are essential for learning, building friendships and developing confidence. Some children may need extra help to develop their speech, language or communication skills. This may include understanding instructions, using words and sentences, pronouncing sounds, or expressing themselves clearly.

Signs a Child May Need Support

Children may benefit from extra help if they:

  • Find it difficult to follow instructions

  • Use limited vocabulary or only short sentences

  • Struggle to pronounce certain sounds

  • Find it hard to join in conversations

  • Show frustration when trying to express themselves

How We Support in School

At Woodchurch, we use a range of approaches to help children strengthen their communication skills, including:

  • Visual supports and symbols

  • Breaking instructions into simple, clear steps

  • Allowing extra time for children to respond

  • Encouraging turn-taking, listening and conversation games

  • Working with Speech and Language Therapists (SALT) where needed

The Balance System in Kent

In Kent, schools and families use the Balance System, developed by Balance CIC, to understand a child’s communication needs and match the right type of support.

The Balance System works at four levels:

  • Universal – strategies used for all children in class (e.g. visuals, clear routines)

  • Targeted – small-group or one-to-one support for children who need extra help

  • Specialist – direct support from Speech and Language Therapists or other professionals

  • Specialist Plus – intensive, highly tailored input for children with more complex needs

By using this framework, we can make sure children get the right help, at the right time, in the right place.

How Families Can Help at Home

Parents and carers can support communication skills by:

  • Talking together often – describe what you are doing and ask open questions

  • Sharing books and stories daily

  • Singing songs and rhymes

  • Allowing time for children to speak without rushing them

  • Playing games that build listening and turn-taking skills
