Caring for God’s Creation at Woodchurch Primary School

At Woodchurch Primary School, we believe that caring for God’s creation is a vital part of our role as a Church school and as global citizens. We teach children to love and protect the natural world.

We are committed to taking climate action seriously through our curriculum, school environment, and everyday practices.

Learning Through the Curriculum

Environmental education is woven through many subjects, helping children to understand:

  • The importance of sustainability

  • The causes and effects of climate change

  • How to protect wildlife and natural habitats

  • The role of recycling, reusing, and reducing waste

  • The need to conserve water and energy

From Science and Geography to RE and PSHE, pupils explore both the beauty and fragility of the Earth — and their own power to make a difference.

Taking Action in School

We encourage children to become active stewards of creation through practical action, including:

  • Eco-friendly initiatives such as recycling, composting, and waste reduction

  • Outdoor learning, using our school grounds and local environment as natural classrooms

  • Gardening and wildlife projects, from planting flowers and growing vegetables to building bug hotels

  • Energy awareness, encouraging everyone to switch off lights and devices when not in use

  • Sustainable travel, promoting walking, cycling, and car-sharing where possible

Using and Respecting Our Environment

Our beautiful rural setting helps children connect with nature in meaningful ways, through:

  • Outdoor prayer and reflection spaces

  • Nature trails and bug hunts

  • Forest School-inspired activities

  • Mindful time outdoors to support wellbeing and gratitude for creation
