Computing
At Woodchurch CE Primary School, we want all children to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology. Our Computing curriculum equips pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a digital world—both now and in the future.
We follow the Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work, which is carefully designed to ensure coverage of the National Curriculum and progression across year groups. Lessons are engaging, purposeful, and accessible to all learners.
Our Computing Curriculum
The curriculum is structured into three key strands, each of which is essential to building a well-rounded digital education:
1. Computer Science
This strand teaches children how digital systems work and how to program them. Through coding, debugging and logical thinking, children learn to create simple programs and games and explore the foundations of how computers process information.
Computer Science forms the core technical skills of our Computing curriculum, and we follow the full recommended sequence of Purple Mash units to ensure a strong understanding in this area.
2. Information Technology
This area focuses on using a range of digital tools and software for different purposes, such as word processing, spreadsheets, creating presentations, and handling data. Children learn how to combine content, analyse information, and present their ideas effectively using technology.
Information Technology is often woven into other areas of the curriculum, allowing pupils to apply and deepen their digital skills through cross-curricular learning.
3. Digital Literacy
Being digitally literate means more than just knowing how to use technology—it’s about using it safely, respectfully, and responsibly. Through dedicated Digital Literacy lessons, children learn how to protect themselves online, understand their digital footprint, and develop the confidence to navigate the digital world wisely.
This includes regular learning around online safety, cyberbullying, privacy, and digital wellbeing, helping children become positive and responsible digital citizens.
Why Computing Matters
Technology is a vital part of everyday life. Through our Computing curriculum, we aim to:
-
Prepare children for the challenges of a rapidly changing digital world
-
Encourage creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving
-
Foster a strong understanding of online safety and digital responsibility
-
Support learning across all areas of the curriculum
We are proud to provide a curriculum that not only teaches essential computing skills but also prepares pupils to use technology positively and purposefully in all areas of their lives.
