Design & Technology

At Woodchurch CE Primary School, our Design and Technology (D&T) curriculum is carefully designed to inspire creativity, encourage problem-solving, and provide hands-on experiences that prepare children for a rapidly changing world.

We believe that D&T is more than just making things – it’s about developing practical skills, understanding the purpose of design, and learning how to turn ideas into functional products that solve real-world problems.

A Progressive and Engaging Curriculum

Our D&T curriculum is taught through exciting, cross-curricular topics tailored to each year group. From EYFS to Year 6, pupils build on their knowledge and skills in a sequenced and purposeful way. Each year, children encounter increasingly complex challenges across key areas such as:

  • Structures and mechanisms

  • Cooking and nutrition

  • Textiles

  • Electrical and mechanical systems

  • Digital design

The curriculum supports children in understanding and applying the design process: investigating, planning, making, evaluating, and refining their ideas. Each project is linked to a key question or real-life context that adds meaning and motivation to the learning.

Building Knowledge Through Experience

Throughout their time at Woodchurch, pupils explore:

  • Historic and global food traditions through cooking projects that celebrate different cultures and eras.

  • Problem-solving through design—for example, designing pulley systems inspired by the challenges faced by Ancient Egyptians or building strong bridges to connect global communities.

  • Innovation and sustainability, such as designing eco-friendly machines or digital tools to help people in the modern world.

Skills for Life

Our D&T curriculum helps pupils:

  • Think creatively and critically

  • Work collaboratively

  • Develop resilience and independence

  • Learn essential life skills such as food preparation and tool safety

  • Understand the role of design and technology in society and the wider world

By the end of Year 6, our pupils have experienced a rich variety of D&T challenges, giving them confidence, practical know-how, and a sense of achievement that they carry forward into their next stage of learning.
