Maths
At Woodchurch CE Primary School, we believe that mathematics is a vital life skill and a powerful tool for understanding the world. Our aim is to develop confident, enthusiastic mathematicians who can think critically, reason logically, and apply their understanding to real-life situations.
Mathematics is everywhere—from problem-solving and data interpretation to decision-making and planning—and we want every child to leave Woodchurch equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed both academically and beyond.
Our Approach
We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme, which provides a structured and coherent journey through the key mathematical concepts from EYFS to Year 6. This mastery-based approach ensures that:
-
Learning is sequenced and progressive
-
Concepts are explored in depth before moving on
-
Every child has the opportunity to succeed and enjoy maths
Our curriculum is underpinned by the three core aims of the National Curriculum:
-
Fluency – developing quick and accurate recall of key facts and methods
-
Reasoning – explaining and justifying mathematical thinking
-
Problem Solving – applying learning to unfamiliar contexts and challenges
How We Teach
At Woodchurch, we embed mathematical understanding using a Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach:
-
Concrete – using physical resources to explore mathematical ideas
-
Pictorial – representing problems through diagrams and images
-
Abstract – applying concepts using symbols and numbers
This helps children not only understand what they are doing, but why it works and how to apply it to other areas of learning or real-world problems.
We also place great emphasis on mathematical vocabulary and discussion, encouraging children to explain their reasoning and to explore different methods and strategies with confidence.
Progression and Aspirations
Our Maths curriculum is designed to ensure clear progression from year to year. Each new concept builds on prior learning, allowing children to revisit, consolidate, and extend their understanding over time.
By the time children leave us at the end of Year 6, they are well prepared for the challenges of secondary school and beyond. More importantly, they have developed a positive attitude towards maths, seeing it not as a barrier but as a subject filled with opportunity, logic, and beauty.
Why Maths Matters
We believe that maths:
-
Empowers children to make sense of the world
-
Develops perseverance and logical thinking
-
Builds essential life skills such as budgeting, measuring, and data handling
-
Opens doors to a wide range of careers and future learning
"Mathematics is the most beautiful and the most powerful creation of the human spirit."
– Stefan Banach
