At Woodchurch, we are passionate about developing a love for language learning and fostering an appreciation of different cultures. We use the Language Angels French Scheme of Work to deliver a high-quality, engaging Modern Foreign Languages curriculum that gives our pupils the confidence to communicate in both spoken and written French for real-life purposes.

Our aim is to lay strong foundations for future language learning. Through our curriculum, pupils develop transferable skills that support the acquisition of other languages and deepen their understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. We want children to leave Woodchurch feeling inspired and equipped to continue learning languages at secondary school and beyond, with aspirations to study, travel, or work in other countries.

The Language Angels scheme is carefully mapped to meet the attainment targets of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2.

Implementation

While language teaching is formally required from Key Stage 2, we believe early exposure matters. In EYFS and KS1, children are introduced to simple vocabulary and songs in a variety of languages when relevant to topics or daily routines. This helps spark curiosity and enthusiasm for language learning from a young age.

Lessons are structured, cumulative, and fun—allowing children to build up their skills and confidence step by step.

Impact

By introducing languages early in EYFS and KS1, pupils begin KS2 with a positive attitude and familiarity with key words and phrases. As they move through Key Stage 2, they learn to apply grammatical knowledge, form full sentences, and engage in basic conversations in French.

Our curriculum ensures that children leave Woodchurch with:

  • The confidence to speak and write in French

  • An understanding of the relevance of languages in their lives

  • The aspiration to continue learning languages at secondary school and beyond
