Music
At Woodchurch CE Primary School, we believe music has the power to inspire creativity, enrich the soul, and bring people together. Our music curriculum is designed to nurture a lifelong love of music by offering children varied, engaging experiences across different genres, historical periods, and cultural traditions.
Through music, children at Woodchurch learn to express themselves, build confidence, and develop a sense of community. As they progress through school, they grow as musicians by:
-
Listening to and evaluating a wide range of musical styles
-
Understanding how music is created, structured, and communicated
-
Singing and developing vocal techniques
-
Learning to play musical instruments
-
Creating and composing music individually and in groups
How We Teach Music
From EYFS to Year 6, music is taught using the Charanga Music Scheme, an interactive and progressive programme that provides a rich curriculum alongside a wide library of songs, resources, and instrumental courses. Charanga ensures that children develop their musical knowledge and skills step by step, with clear links to termly class topics to deepen learning across subjects.
Children are taught key musical elements and terminology, enabling them to describe and analyse both the music they hear and the pieces they create. They explore rhythm, beat, and tempo using untuned percussion, and move on to tuned instruments such as the recorder, ocarina, and ukulele to understand pitch and melody. Formal musical notation is introduced from Year 3.
Singing and Performance
Singing plays a central role in our music curriculum. In addition to classroom learning, children participate in weekly singing assemblies and perform for wider audiences at events throughout the year.
We also offer extra-curricular opportunities such as the Rocksteady Music School programme and after-school music clubs, giving children more ways to explore their interests and grow their talents.
The Impact of Music
Music learning is monitored and assessed throughout each key stage to ensure children meet National Curriculum expectations and are receiving the full benefit of a well-rounded musical education.
By the time they leave Woodchurch CE Primary School, children will:
-
Have developed a solid foundation in music theory and practical skills
-
Feel confident performing, composing, and discussing music
-
Be equipped to continue their musical journey in secondary school and beyond
-
Understand the value of music in both personal expression and shared experience
