PE
At Woodchurch CE Primary School, we are passionate about delivering a high-quality, inclusive PE curriculum that inspires all children to enjoy being active and to develop confidence in their physical skills and abilities. PE at Woodchurch is more than just sport—it is about building healthy habits, learning teamwork, and instilling life-long values that children carry with them beyond the classroom.
Our curriculum is carefully planned and structured to teach children how their bodies work, how to move safely and efficiently, and how to stay physically and mentally healthy. Whether through team sports, individual challenges, or fitness-based activities, our aim is to ensure every child feels motivated, included, and successful.
Curriculum Intent
We want our children to:
-
Build physical confidence and competence
-
Understand the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle
-
Learn to cooperate, collaborate, and show respect in team settings
-
Develop key values such as fairness, perseverance, and self-discipline
-
Enjoy a wide range of physical opportunities that they may not otherwise experience
From September 2025, we are strengthening our curriculum further by working with local cricket, tennis, and hockey coaches, bringing expert guidance and new energy into lessons.
Implementation
PE is delivered through a combination of:
-
High-quality lessons taught by class teachers
-
Specialist coaching through the Greenacres Sports Partnership, which provides a consistent, progressive scheme of learning aligned to the National Curriculum
-
External sports coaches who help deliver exciting and varied lessons
Each class receives two hours of PE per week, ensuring regular opportunities for skill development and active participation. Lessons build progressively, with key skills revisited and deepened over time, helping children to “know more and remember more.”
Beyond the PE Lesson
Our commitment to physical education extends beyond the curriculum:
-
National Sports Week gives children the chance to try fun, new sports and activities they may never have experienced before
-
The Daily Mile encourages movement and mindfulness through regular running or walking breaks
-
A wide range of before and after-school sports clubs are offered to promote active lifestyles and help children explore personal interests in sport
We also take pride in celebrating children’s sporting achievements—both in and out of school—during our weekly Celebration Assemblies.
Impact
Through our PE curriculum and wider provision, we aim to ensure that:
-
All children develop fundamental movement skills and apply them in a range of sports and settings
-
Pupils gain confidence and the ability to challenge themselves and aim for personal bests
-
Children leave Woodchurch with a positive view of PE and a desire to remain active for life
-
Pupils understand the link between physical health, mental wellbeing, and learning
-
Every child feels proud and celebrated for their participation and progress
By the time our children move on to secondary school, they are physically literate, mentally motivated, and equipped with the social and emotional skills that sport and PE uniquely provide.
