PSHE & RSE
At Woodchurch CE Primary School, PSHE and RSE play a vital role in helping our children become confident, respectful, safe, and well-rounded individuals. We aim to equip children with the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to lead happy, healthy lives and to make positive choices both now and in the future.
Our PSHE Curriculum
We use the Pol-Ed scheme of work to deliver a well-structured and engaging PSHE curriculum. Pol-Ed is designed to:
-
Support children’s mental and emotional wellbeing
-
Build positive relationships
-
Teach online safety and responsible digital behaviour
-
Develop an understanding of financial education, citizenship, and personal safety
-
Promote equality, inclusion, and diversity
Pol-Ed aligns with the PSHE Association’s recommended programme of study and is fully in line with the DfE’s statutory guidance for Health and Relationships Education.
Children explore key themes such as:
-
Respect for themselves and others
-
Managing feelings and friendships
-
Coping with change and loss
-
Personal safety and consent
-
Growing up and taking responsibility
-
Rights, responsibilities, and British Values
These lessons are delivered weekly, with a focus on active discussion, collaboration, and reflection. Lessons are tailored to be age-appropriate and sensitive to the needs of each class.
Our RSE Curriculum
For the Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) element of the curriculum, we follow the Christopher Winter Project (CWP)—a trusted and evidence-based scheme that supports schools in delivering RSE in a safe, inclusive, and age-appropriate way.
RSE through the CWP focuses on:
-
Building and maintaining healthy relationships
-
Understanding emotions, boundaries, and consent
-
Naming body parts using correct terminology
-
Preparing children for the physical and emotional changes of puberty
-
Developing respect for themselves and others
-
Understanding different types of families and relationships
Parents are fully informed of RSE content before it is taught, and we encourage open communication between home and school. While Relationships Education is statutory, parents retain the right to withdraw their child from certain aspects of Sex Education, and we will always be happy to discuss this in more detail.
Why PSHE and RSE Matter
PSHE and RSE are not just classroom subjects—they are essential to developing:
-
Resilience, self-esteem, and confidence
-
The ability to make informed choices
-
Respectful attitudes toward others, regardless of differences
-
Skills to navigate a complex and ever-changing world
We want all children to leave Woodchurch CE Primary School as compassionate, informed, and responsible citizens, ready for the next stage in their education and life journey.
